Elective Angioplasty

What is elective angioplasty?

For patients with coronary artery disease who are experiencing significant chest pain, shortness of breath, and/or other symptoms of partially obstructed arteries, elective angioplasty can help relieve those symptoms, and in some patients, prevent more serious heart conditions.

Angioplasty uses a medical “balloon” to widen blocked arteries. The balloon presses against the inside wall of the artery to open the space and improve blood flow. A metal stent is then placed across the artery wall to keep the artery from narrowing again.

Why should I have my angioplasty at Hunterdon Medical Center?

The catheterization lab suite is equipped to handle elective angioplasty procedures. Our staff is fully trained and well experienced with angioplasty procedures as we have been a primary angioplasty center since 2005.

Your cardiologist will review your medical history and determine if you are a candidate for angioplasty at Hunterdon Medical Center.  During the procedure, your coronary anatomy is obtained from the angiogram and this will determine eligibility for elective angioplasty.

Advantages of having your angioplasty procedure at Hunterdon Medical Center:

  • State of the art catheterization lab facility
  • Conveniently close to home
  • Provide continuity of care
  • In most cases this is a same-day procedure

Why is it better to have my procedure done at Hunterdon Medical Center?

Your procedure will be performed by a well-trained interventional cardiologist and nurses who know you and your case extremely well.  Additionally, your procedure and your recovery will be completed in the same unit, which eliminates the need to transport you from one area of the hospital to another.  Most patients are discharged to go home on the very same day.
