This year for the November 21st Great American Smokeout, Hunterdon Healthcare practices challenged each other to inspire their patients to enjoy the benefits of being tobacco and vape free for at least a day or even the rest of their lives.  Five practices competed for the coveted golden boxing glove trophy awarded to a practice motivating patients to go smoke-free from October 1st to November 21st.  A total of 441 patients took the pledge.  First prize went to Hunterdon Family Medicine at Highlands led by champion Jean Cordero.  The second-place prize was awarded to Hunterdon Family Medicine at Cornerstone with Cindy Pormilli and Roberta Desapio leading their efforts.  Third place was earned by Advanced Obstetrics and Gynecology championed by April Abelman.  Support for this year’s competition came from the Hunterdon Healthcare Foundation and ShopRite of Flemington.

An annual event since 1977, smokers from across the United States participate in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout on the 3rd Thursday in November.  For two years, Hunterdon Healthcare has included vaping cessation in their smokeout efforts. To prepare for the 2019 event 149 Hunterdon Healthcare employees took advantage of tobacco and vaping cessation awareness training.

By quitting, even for just one day, smokers take an important step towards reducing their cancer risk and the risk of other diseases including heart disease.  “Damage from tobacco smoke is immediate, but after only 12 hours of quitting the level of carbon monoxide in the blood lowers to normal and the body begins to recuperate” says Tobacco Cessation Champion, Jean Cordero.

Cases of the new vaping associated lung injury have now occurred in all 50 states with over 2,000 people experiencing serious illness and 47 confirmed deaths.  “If you experience a respiratory illness, which can happen more frequently during the winter months, it is important to share with your physician if you vape,” notes Senior Director of Population Health Rose Puelle, PhD.

Hunterdon Healthcare supports tobacco and vaping cessation year-round. If you or someone you care about would like to learn about the health benefits of going tobacco or vape free and methods to achieve success, talk to your primary care provider.  You can find a primary care provider by calling the Hunterdon Healthcare Partners referral line at 908-806-9118.
