Direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests, such as AncestryDNA or 23andMe, are becoming more and more popular. The tests provide a wide range of genetic information.  Some DTC genetic tests, such as those offered by AncestryDNA, focus exclusively on ancestry.  Others, such as 23andMe’s Health + Ancestry test, provide additional information about disease risks, carrier status for recessive conditions, and other health and wellness traits.

The Family Risk Assessment Program at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center will be holding a free information session on Decoding At-Home DNA Testing on Tuesday, October 30 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The program will be held in Meeting Room A/B at Hunterdon Medical Center, located at 2100 Wescott Drive in Flemington.

This education session offers the opportunity to answer questions about the results of these genetic tests. Some of the topics that will be covered include:

  • Ancestry testing: What will it really tell me?
  • Health-related testing: How useful is it, really?
  • Raw data: What is it, and do I want it?
  • So, should I buy a kit?

Kristen Koprowski, MS, LGC, a Genetic Counselor Family with the Risk Assessment Program, will lead the discussion. To register for the program, call 908-788-6157.

The Family Risk Assessment Program (FRAP), located within the Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center, is a program designed to assist individuals with a personal or family history of cancer to understand how hereditary factors may contribute to cancer risk and how that risk can be reduced and/or managed. The Family Risk Assessment Program is now offering free one-on-one education sessions to individuals who would like to learn more about their results from direct-to-consumer genetic tests such as 23andMe, AncestryDNA, and others.  For further information, please call the Family Risk Assessment Program at 908-788-2535 and ask for Kristen.
