Beyond Survivorship – Cancer Thriving & Surviving Workshop Offers Support
Cancer survivorship is a journey that extends beyond the treatment process. The number of cancer survivors in the US continues to increase due to the growing and aging population, as well as, increases in cancer survival rates due to advances in treatment and early detection, according to the American Cancer Society. There were nearly 17 million Americans with a history of cancer as of January 2019 a number that is projected to reach more than 22 million by 2030.
A FREE workshop, Cancer Thriving & Surviving, is being offered designed to serve this growing population starting October 1, 2019 at the Hunterdon Health & Wellness Center in Clinton. The workshop offers community members impacted by cancer an opportunity to learn and engage in conversation that help them maximize their long term health outcomes and achieve an active and fulfilling life. It provides the continuation of support that addresses complex issues that both cancer and its treatment present. Trained facilitators guide participants though an evidence-based process to explore challenges, develop new skills and create action plans that support their health and wellness moving forward.
Often people who have survived cancer report that the most unsettling part of their experience was when treatment ended and they were left with the uncertainty of what next. This is normal and why the Hunterdon-Mercer Chronic Disease Coalition in partnership with the Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center support community programming designed for the specific needs of cancer survivors and their caregivers.
“Care for our patients doesn’t end when their treatment is over, states Barbara Tofani, RN, DNP, Administrative Director at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. Cancer survivorship is a distinct phase of the cancer trajectory with opportunities to improve care long term. It is important to support patients and their caregivers with programs and services that help empower them to create plans that provide continued quality of life.”
This 6-week program runs every Tuesday from 1-3:30 pm starting October 1 through November 5. To enhance the wellness experience, all registrants will receive a complimentary 6 week membership to the Hunterdon Health & Wellness Center in Clinton. To register, call 908-237-2328.
