How do I know if I have a sleep disorder?
Sleep disorders can severely affect quality of life, as the body needs sleep for restoration so it can function properly.
Sleep disorders may indicate a serious illness, as people who are affected by sleep apnea may also be affected by cardiac problems and diabetes.
Symptoms of a Sleep Disorder:
- excessive sleepiness during waking hours
- difficulty concentrating
- irritability and depression
- pauses in breathing during sleep
- chronic loud snoring – sign of sleep apnea
- frequent awakenings
- coughing or gasping for air during sleep
- restless body movements
- unusual behavior during sleep (ex: kicking, punching, shouting during sleep)
What if I show symptoms of a sleep disorder?
If you or your bed partner exhibits symptoms of a sleep disorder, discuss your concerns with your primary physician. You may be a candidate for an overnight sleep study at the Sleep Disorders Center at Hunterdon Medical Center where we can evaluate, diagnose and begin treatment in one 12-hour period.
