Inpatient Services

Hunterdon Medical Center´s inpatient behavioral health unit is a 14-bed, voluntary facility which provides short-term intensive treatment for those in need of psychiatric stabilization or detoxification from alcohol and/or drugs.

Our treatment approach

involves a multidisciplinary team. The focus is on a common goal of returning patients to their families and community as quickly as possible.

The average length of stay on the Unit is five days.

The Unit provides a structured atmosphere for patients and family members to facilitate treatment and recovery.

The sense of community fostered here provides a sense of security, encourages interaction with peers, family and staff, and facilitates wellness.

Patients may receive a variety of therapeutic experiences, as indicated in their treatment plans.

  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Group psychotherapy
  • Occupational and activities therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Alcoholics Anonymous meetings
  • Patient/Family education groups for information about illness and recovery

Admission Criteria

The Unit admits patients over the age of 18 who may benefit from short-term intensive treatment of psychiatric problems or addictions. Since the Unit is voluntary, admission is a reflection of the patient´s willingness to become an active participant in his or her treatment.

Evaluation

The multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, nursing assessment and psychosocial evaluation and activity assessment. Patients admitted for detoxification are also evaluated by an addictions treatment counselor.

Discharge Planning

Discharge planning is central to the treatment process, and is initiated at the time of admission. The treatment team, in conjunction with patient and family, identify discharge needs and identify referrals to related programs and services, including outpatient care, employment support and ongoing monitoring.

Emergency Services

Psychiatric Emergency Services are provided to the community on a 24–hour a day, seven–day a week basis. Individuals and their families can walk into our outpatient suite Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, or can present to the Emergency Department at any time. Individuals are provided with evaluations, treatment, linkage to other services as needed, and follow–up. Emergency Services operates a 24–hour crisis hotline at (908) 788-6400.
