IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram)

An IVP is a test that uses dye to outline the kidneys and ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder) on an x-ray. The IVP is a urinary tract X-ray that is enhanced by the introduction of a "contrast agent" into your bloodstream. The injected contrast is then filtered by the kidneys and collected in the renal collecting system, which is the basis for the images. By examining the images, your radiologist can evaluate the size, location, function, possible obstruction, drainage, or any lesions of your kidneys, ureters, and bladder.

There are a number of reasons why your physician may order an IVP, for example if you have suffered from an infection of the bladder or kidney, had blood in your urine, or experienced pain in your side. Your physician will want to see if you have some sort of obstruction, such as a kidney stone, or if some other medical condition is present.

About The Exam

During an IVP, you will undress completely and put on an exam gown. You will lie on your back. An x-ray of your kidneys, ureters, and bladder may first be taken without contrast. A needle will be put into a vein in your arm or hand and dye (also called contrast material) will be injected. You may feel warm and notice a salty taste in your mouth when the dye goes into your vein. The first x-ray will be taken about 2 minutes after the dye is injected. More x-rays will be taken after 5, 10 and 15 minutes. A band may be put across your abdomen and pulled tight. This pressure closes off the ureters, and helps the radiologist see how your kidneys are working. At the end of the test, you may be asked to urinate. Another x-ray will be taken to see if urine has stayed in your bladder.

After the procedure, the radiologist will study the films and dictate a written report that will be forwarded to your physician. You should drink plenty of fluids (6 to 8 glasses a day) and resume your normal diet. You may resume your regular activities when you feel up to it.
