Many hearing aid options are available for hearing impaired individuals, including analog and digital amplification. Following an audiological evaluation, a hearing aid evaluation is performed to determine the most appropriate hearing aid(s). Most hearing aids are programmed via computer, so adjustments can be made based on each patient’s specific needs.

Hearing Instrument Styles:

  • Behind the Ear (BTE): Appropriate for hearing losses from mild to profound.  This style is best suited for pediatric patients and individuals with excessive moisture and accumulative cerumen (earwax).  This style comes with:
    • Directional microphones
    • Multiple listening programs
    • Tele-coil for compatibility
  • Custom In-the-Ear (ITE): Fills the outer portion of the ear.  This style is appropriate for mild to severe hearing losses and may also include:
    • Directional microphones
    • Multiple listening programs
    • Tele-coil for compatibility
  • In-the-Canal (ITC): Smaller model than the full-shell In-the-Ear style.  It is appropriate for hearing losses from mild to moderately severe.  Options are limited due to size restrictions.  Good manual dexterity is more important for this style
  • Completely In-the-Canal (CIC): Almost invisible.  If cosmetic appeal is important, this may be the best device.  The appropriateness of this style is limited based on a person’s degree of hearing loss and manual dexterity.
  • Receiver-In-the-Ear (RITE) and “Slim Tube:The most unobtrusive type of hearing instrument currently available.  This style keeps the ear canal open to reduce any plugged-up sensation.  The appropriateness of these hearing devices in limited based on the degree of hearing loss.
