Holistic Model of Care
Hunterdon Medical Center has recently adopted the Holistic Nursing model to bring holistic nursing into patient care areas. The goal of holistic nursing is to encompass all nursing practice that heals the whole person. The mind, body, and spirit are an integral part of the healing process and human values are emphasized.
The practice of holistic nursing draws on nursing knowledge, theories, expertise and intuition to guide nurses to become partners with patients to strengthen the patients’ role in the healing process. Recently the hospital began quiet time each day from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. on inpatient units to promote a healing environment and tea time for patients from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In addition, a therapeutic music program has also been developed through the Volunteer Services Department. The music helps to provide a soothing and relaxing environment for patients.
Nursing care in the Hunterdon Healthcare System is rendered to the patient in a holistic manner. We believe acknowledging the individuality and uniqueness of each person fulfills this responsibility. We believe that a holistic-centered approach to nursing care is essential to the delivery of high quality care. We uphold the basic philosophy and tenets of a holistic care model, which is incorporated for the ongoing improvement of services. Through holistic nursing, based on the work of Florence Nightingale, we create a compassionate theoretical framework for informing practice with a goal of creating optimal healing environments. Using a Holistic Model of Care, we can fully care for our patients; physically, psychosocially and spiritually. We achieve excellence in nursing care in a shared governance environment where nurses are given the responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of patient care.
