On May 24, 2018, Hunterdon Medical Center held a reception and dedication ceremony to celebrate the life of nationally known watercolor artist and co-author, Dan Campanelli, on the one-year anniversary of his passing.   A commemorative plaque was dedicated to honor this talented man and four of Dan’s prints were unveiled and placed on 3 West near where he spent so much of his time in the hospital while he was ill.  Family, friends and staff also enjoyed a tour of the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Unit where other pieces of Dan’s work are displayed.

Dan’s original paintings of depicted tranquil scenes of barns, historic dwellings, grist mills and other landmarks are represented in private, public, corporate, and fine art gallery collections throughout the U.S.   He was a distinguished artist and won over 100 art awards and honors, including national gold medals.

When Dan was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and then Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, friends suggested he go to New York or Pennsylvania for his treatment.  He explained that he was confident in the care that would be provided by the doctors and staff of Hunterdon Medical Center.  Marty Campanelli, Dan’s beloved wife, states “Hunterdon Medical Center is where Dan spent 106 days. He really got to know everyone from the doctors, to the physician assistants, to the nurses, the aides and even housekeeping staff. This was literally his home away from home and we both were happy with his care here.”

For patients, seeing the familiar local scenes that Dan depicted in his paintings, such as the historical Red Mill of Clinton, is uplifting and helps bring them comfort.  Marty mentioned, “Dan always wanted her to bring a painting for his hospital room so he could show staff who wanted to know about his work.  I know Dan is pleased that these four prints now hang outside the rooms where he spent so much of his last months and days.   He has gotten his wish.”
