Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center Looking for Participants in Prostate Cancer Research Study
Published: April 21, 2009
Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center, a Partner with Fox Chase Cancer Center, is conducting research in hope of learning more about the cause of prostate cancer, how it clusters in some families and what increases the risk of prostate cancer. This research may help develop ways to prevent prostate cancer and find the most effective way to screen for prostate cancer. If you are interested in being part of this study, men must be between the ages of 35-69 years without a diagnosis of prostate cancer and with any of the following criteria:
- A brother or father with prostate cancer
- Two relatives (such as uncles) on the same side of the family diagnosed with prostate cancer
- Any African American man regardless of a family history of prostate cancer
- Any man with a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.
Participants in this study will be asked to complete a questionnaire about your family cancer history, your diet and some of your knowledge about prostate cancer. The information will be updated annually. The staff of the Prostate Risk Assessment Program at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center will provide you with education about prostate cancer and will evaluate your family history for cancer risks. Participants will be encouraged to seek annual prostate cancer screening, including a digital rectal exam and a Prostate Specific Antigen. If study participant’s PSA exceeds 1.5ng/ml, further intervention will be taken to screen the participant for prostate cancer.
