Diabetes Community Fair To Be Held At Hunterdon Medical Center

There are 20.8 million people in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 6.2 million people are unaware that they have the disease. The Hunterdon Medical Center’s Center for Nutrition and Diabetes Management will host a Diabetes Community Fair on Saturday, April 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Hunterdon Medical Center - 1st floor main lobby area for people who want to learn how to manage their diabetes.
Exhibitors will feature the latest products and attendees will enjoy informative presentations:
- 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. - Common Foot Problems in Diabetes - Facilitator: Howard Tzorfas, DPM, Podiatrist
- 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. - Diabetes and Your Eyes - Facilitator: Darmakusuma Ie, MD, FACS, Retinal Specialist
- 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. - Diabetes: Knowledge to LIVE By - Facilitator: Wanda Ryan, M.D., F.A.C.E.
Free screenings will be available during the event, which include foot exams, blood pressure checks, stress assessments and Body Mass Index. For people with Diabetes there will also be blood glucose checks and dilated eye exams. The dilated eye exams are provided by the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Attendees must pre-register with the Center for Nutrition and Diabetes Management for the dilated eye exam.
In addition, from 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. a cooking demonstration will be presented in the auditorium by Velta Soucie, RD, BS, CDE, Center for Nutrition and Diabetes Management Nutritionist, Susan Lang-Saponara, RD, BS, Shop-Rite Nutritionist and Margaret Dobbs, Shop-Rite Live Right Merchandiser. Attendees will learn that portion size does matter. Recipes will be provided for all participants.
Music during the day will be provided by The Priority 5. The Diabetes Community Fair is free for the community and attendees will have the opportunity to win door prizes.
