“Approximately 10 percent of all cancers are due to a gene mutation which was inherited from one parent or the other,” says Jackie Hale, an Advanced Practice Nurse who coordinates the Family Risk Assessment Program at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. “Angelina Jolie’s recent disclosure focused media attention to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, but other cancers also can be hereditary, including colon, uterine, and kidney cancer and melanoma. Hereditary risk factors for other types of cancers, including lung, prostate and pancreatic cancers, are being identified.”

At 10:15 a.m. on Monday, May 13th, Hunterdon Healthcare employees gathered awaiting a historic phone call from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) – this phone call announced that Hunterdon Healthcare has been re-designated Magnet status. This prestigious award recognizes hospitals for excellence in nursing care. Only a select group of hospitals in the country achieve this honor. In fact, only about 6% of all health care organizations in the United States have achieved Magnet status. Hunterdon Healthcare is among an elite group of hospitals to achieve Magnet recognition.

Hunterdon Medical Center’s Foundation was recently presented with a check for $10,000 from the 10th Annual Memorial March Madness Tournament, in honor of Cynthia K. Critelli, Readington Township resident who passed away in 2004. The money from this event was raised in benefit of Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center’s Breast Care Program. Hunterdon Medical Center appreciates the thoughtfulness behind this donation and the effort put forth to have made this event happen for the tenth year.

September 20, 2011 marked the beginning of a new lease on life for Mario Cortina of Pittstown. It was on that day that Mario underwent bariatric surgery at Hunterdon Medical Center, finally hoping to win control over his weight – a battle he had fought throughout his lifetime.
