Hunterdon Medical Center Listed in U.S. News and World Report’s Best Hospitals Issue

Published July 17, 2014

U.S. News & World Report has released its 25th annual Best Hospitals rankings and Hunterdon Medical Center ranked 4th in Central Jersey, 11th among the 100 New Jersey Hospitals and 28th among the 180 New York metropolitan hospitals reviewed by U.S. News and World Report.  In addition, Hunterdon Medical Center was ranked high-performing in gastroenterology and GI surgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, nephrology and geriatrics.

This year's rankings showcase 144 hospitals out of 5,000 hospitals nationwide, including the best in each of 16 medical specialties. The criteria reflect the core mission of Best Hospitals, which is to help guide patients who need the highest level of medical care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age.

Hospitals that are not nationally ranked can still achieve a ranking in their state and can be recognized as among the best in their metropolitan area or region, thus making the roster of Best Regional Hospitals. To do so, a hospital has to perform at nearly the level of the nationally ranked institutions (in the top 25 percent) in at least one specialty. The Best Regional Hospital’s lists are aimed primarily at consumers who seek high-quality care but may be less willing or able to travel long distances. These lists give such patients and their families more options within their community and in their health insurance network.

Patient survival rates, infection rates, patient safety measures, nurse-to-patient ratios, and other objective data underpin the rankings in most specialties. National surveys of medical specialists also were factored in.

Hunterdon Healthcare exists to prevent disease, illness and injury; to seek cures; relieve pain; give comfort; and inspire a healthy way of living. Hunterdon Medical Center, the flagship hospital, treats over 8,000 inpatients annually, with over 33,000 Emergency Department visits and over 400,000 outpatient visits per year. The 178-bed teaching hospital provides a full range of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic inpatient and outpatient hospital and community health services.
