The Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $12,000 grant to Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center for the VIP Program of Hunterdon County, which was established to educate women and improve the screening rates of women age 65 and older residing in Hunterdon County. Statistics showed that 46% of women covered by Medicare in Hunterdon County do not get their annual screening mammogram. The program seeks to identify the barriers that are preventing women from receiving this valuable exam.

Key community programs like Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center receive funding from events that Central and South Jersey Affiliate holds throughout the year including the Komen Central and South Jersey Race for the Cure scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.  Nearly twenty thousand participants will participate in what has grown into the largest 5K race in New Jersey.

As a result, the Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate has invested more than $18 million in community breast cancer programs in its service area of the 13 central and southern counties of New Jersey. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated stay in these 13 counties. The remaining 25 percent goes to national breast cancer research.
