After 26 years of practicing medicine in Hunterdon County, Kevin Mooney, M.D., Family Practice Physician at Phillips-Barber Family Health Center in Lambertville has left to start the next chapter of his career. “I am not retiring, I plan to do locums and work six months out of the year for the rest of my life, hopefully up in Canada to be near family,” explained Dr. Mooney.  His last day at Phillips-Barber was May 31st.

Dr. Mooney went to Medical School in Canada and upon graduation went to practice medicine in the Yukon Territory where he was the first doctor to work in the small community of Furo.  “We had a four bed hospital in Furo then I moved to Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, where we had ten doctors and a slightly larger hospital,” stated Dr. Mooney.  After three years in the Yukon, Dr. Mooney went to practice medicine in Zambia, Africa and then to South Africa where he worked in a mission hospital.  He traveled back to Eastern Ontario Canada and practiced medicine for a few years and decided he was interested in teaching.  He has been teaching residents since 1977, where he taught and practiced medicine in Canada, Illinois and in Maine before making the move to Flemington, NJ and becoming part of the staff at Phillips-Barber Family Health Center and on the faculty of Hunterdon Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program.

While at Hunterdon Medical Center, Dr. Mooney was named Physician of the Year in 2003 by the ARC of Hunterdon.  “I can’t imagine not practicing medicine.  There is a need for family practice in the United States and Canada.   I am enthusiastic and looking forward to the future,” stated Dr. Mooney.   Dr. Mooney will spend six months of the year working in Montreal and helping to take care of his mother who is 89.

Dr. Mooney went on to say, “Being at Hunterdon Medical Center has been the best experience, the physicians, nurses and staff is fantastic.  This is an oasis and we are so fortunate to have a hospital like this in our community.  I will miss my patients, the residents and my colleagues.  We have been privileged to have great residents.  Someone like Elizabeth Koorie, M.D. was talented the day she walked through the door.”  Dr. Koorie graduated from the Family Medicine Residency Program in 2008 and is a physician at Phillips-Barber Family Health Center.  In addition, Cindy Barter, M.D., Family Practice Physician has joined the practice.   Dr. Barter will also take over Dr. Mooney’s position as the Medical Director for the Hunterdon County Department of Health.   Most of Dr. Mooney’s patients will be transitioned to Dr. Koorie and Dr. Barter.  “I don’t worry about my patients; I know they are in good hands,” stated Dr. Mooney.
